Saint-Remy-de-Provence pre-cruise program (3 nights)
July 12th – July 15th, 2012
We are staying at a great little hotel located on the market square of Saint-Remy- de-Provence. The town is just the right size to get a good feel for the countryside of Provence. The town boasts its own significant Roman ruins (Glanam) as well as the asylum where Van Gogh spent time toward the latter part of his life. His painting “Starry Night” depicts the view from his window at the hospital.
- During our three days in the countryside of Provence, we plan to make daily journeys from Saint-Remy to historical, gastronomic, and archaeological sites.
- We’ll have a picnic lunch and visit the Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct in Nimes. Construction began on this wonder about 19 BC.
- We’ll visit the Marche Provencal in Carpentras, one of the oldest markets in France, dating back to 1155. We’ll visit a wine producer in Chateauneuf-du-Pape to sample the wares.
- If time allows, we’ll also do a tasting of olive oil in the region.
- A stay in the area wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the hilltop town of les Baux. We’ll make a morning visit for shopping and sightseeing.
- We’ll be in Saint-Remy for Bastille Day. More information about festivities will be announced as we get closer to the date.
Pre-cruise overnight in Saint-Remy-de-Provence includes
- Three nights at the Hotel Gounod
- Breakfast each morning
- Local sightseeing as indicated above
- Picnic lunch at Pont du Gard
